The European Food Safety Agency recently published a report on the use of new genome technology in food products across the world, including CRISPR\/Cas. The report summarizes that a few products have already found their way onto the market, with over a hundred more in pre-commercial stages. Doctors successfully transplanted a gene-edited pig kidney into a patient with end-stage disease. This marks another milestone in xenotransplant research after two gene-edited pig hearts were transplanted into two patients prior, both of whom passed away months after. While this could alleviate the shotage of availible organs, it also presents signficant ethical concerns in regards to animal exploitation, as the gene-editing procedure for the pigs is painful and ultimately deadly. CRISPRed Pigs: Precision Porcine Gene Editing Combats PRRS Virus Threat<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CRISPR-edited pigs that are immune to the widespread PRRS virus are now awaiting approval from the Food and Drug Administration, which may be completed in less than a year. The virus has infected millions of pigs anually and cost global marekts billions each year for over four decades, which may finally come to an end with the success of CRISPR\/Cas gene-editing in pigs.
