Community-Based Organizing
We believe that there is power in the people. We want to rally a community of members with shared interests and values who are concerned over the current and potential abuse of CRISPR/Cas onto animals to bring more visibility to these issues and organize advocacy efforts. Together, we can bring the change needed in our government and our institutions.
Making Change Happen
As a member of the Association for Responsible Gene-Editing, you’ll be able to take concrete steps together with fellow members towards creating meaningful impact. Here’s just a few examples:
Speaking to potential members
Community building is pivotal to creating institutional change
You can form your own communitity within your institution through the resources we provide
You will be able to bring awareness to these issues, encourage self-accountability, and build the foundation for institutional change
Talking to your institution
Institutional accountability is a critical safegaurd against further abuse within the industry
You will be able to communicate your demands to your institution through our action plan and petition for concrete change
You will be able to put down barriers against abuse at an institutional level and bring wider accountability, allowing change at a wider scale, and prevent others from exploiting animals and the world around them. You will also be able to set an example for other institutions and community members
Petitioning our government
Government regulation will formalize our concerns into codified law and create accountability on a national scale
You and other in our community will work together to present our concerns to the government with our plans and resources and offer legislative solutions that holistically address industry potential and issues
You will be able to put safegaurds into the legal code to protect animals and the enviromment and humans around them and bring change at a national scale while inspiring international counterparts
Creating an Inclusive Community
We understand the importance of buildsing an inclusive, diverse, and equitable community. The Association for Responsible Gene-Editing recognizes the importance of diversity and inclusion in our movement and is committed to uplifting voices from all different backgrounds. We are committed to ensuring that our organization is a safe space for all different identity groups to find power in, and we do so by supporting DEI initiatives in scientific research and community based DEI programs. We also care about creating a diverse community of members within our own organization, and will work relentlessly to do so.
The ARGE also acknowledges the disproportionate impact of issues regarding animal welfare and animal farming can have on oppressed communities[2]. Our work is mindful of and incorporates this dynamic into our advocacy as we seek to amplify advocates who discuss this issue from an intersectional point of view that addresses this disparity.
